Writer/director Robert Altman's Bergmanesque character study is set in a nursing home/rest spa in the Southern California desert, where shy new employee Pinky (Sissy Spacek) is befriended by brash co-worker Millie (Shelley Duvall) and begins to mimic her dress, speech, and behavior.
