I Am Legend (2007)
Superb sci-fi actioner, the third film version of Richard Matheson's novel, stars Will Smith as Robert Neville, a brilliant New York City-based scientist who is seemingly the sole survivor of a virus that has decimated mankind. While attempting to find a cure and figure out if anyone else has survived, he struggles to stave off murderous mutants who have fallen victim to the plague. With Alice Braga, Charlie Tahan, Salli Richardson. 100 min. C/Rtg: PG-13
The Book Of Eli (2010)
Post-apocalyptic actioner stars Denzel Washington as Eli, a loner travelling across what's left of America in order to protect a sacred book that could provide mankind's salvation...or its destruction. Armed with weapons and his unwavering faith, he comes into conflict with Carnegie (Gary Oldman)-a scheming warlord who is determined to use the tome for his own purposes. Mila Kunis, Ray Stevenson, Jennifer Beals co-star; directed by the Hughes Brothers. 118 min. C/Rtg: R
Gravity (2013)
On her first space mission, a medical engineer (Sandra Bullock) faces an enormous challenge when she and a retiring astronaut (George Clooney) are set adrift after their shuttle is destroyed by fragments of a demolished satellite. With the International Space Station in sight, they set out to find a way back-as each orbit of the debris cloud diminishes their chances to survive. Director Alfonso Cuaron's visually dazzling, multi-Oscar-winning drama co-stars Ed Harris. Not in 3D. 91 min. C/Rtg: PG-13
Jupiter Ascending (2015)
Struggling Chicago house cleaner Jupiter Jones (Mila Kunis) always believed she was destined for something more. She couldn't have imagined, though, that she was the reincarnation of a distant galaxy's ruling matriarch...or that the current royal scions who like the status quo would be dispatching assassins to Earth. Can a rebel warrior (Channing Tatum) keep her alive to claim the throne? Splashy sci-fi opus from the Wachowski siblings co-stars Eddie Redmayne, Tuppence Middleton, Sean Bean. 127 min. C/Rtg: PG-13
Midnight Special (2016)
After having been raised--and revered as messianic--by a sequestered Texas cult, 9-year-old Alton Meyer (Jaden Lieberher) finds himself spirited off the compound by his birth father Roy (Michael Shannon). As they share a harrowing drive east--with the cultists, as well as federal authorities, in pursuit--Alton’s revealed to in fact possess extraordinary abilities, and Roy shares his reasons for shepherding his son to an uncanny destiny. Moving, humanistic sci-fi chase thriller co-stars Joel Edgerton, Kirsten Dunst, Adam Driver, and Sam Shepard. 112 min. C/Rtg: PG-13
