Loosely based on Ralph Spence's play "The Gorilla," "Sh! The Octopus" (1937) is set in a secluded lighthouse where a pair of detectives must protect a group of people from the titular aquatic menace. Hugh Herbert, Allen Jenkins star. The slightly delusional Lance O'Leary (Patric Knowles) is sent to a mental hospital where he puts his obsession with detective stories to use in order to solve a murder, in "The Patient in Room 18" (1938). Dick Purcell stars as O'Leary in "Mystery House" (1938) as the would-be private eye who must find out who killed a prominent banker. A groom-to-be is determined to break the jinx that has doomed his fiancée's last three suitors, in "The Smiling Ghost" (1941). Wayne Morris, Brenda Marshall star. An insane asylum escapee enlists his sister's aid for a gruesome killing spree, in "The Hidden Hand" (1942). Craig Stevens, Elisabeth Fraser star. And, a private investigator (Jerome Cowan) may be the only one who can clear a mayoral candidate (Gene Lockhart) of murder, in "Find the Blackmailer" (1943). 6 hrs. total on three discs. Standard; Soundtrack: English Dolby Digital mono.
