Dorothy Mackaill Pre-Code Double Feature: Bright Lights / The Reckless Hour
(1931)
This Dorothy Mackaill double bill starts with the tune-filled early talkie melodrama "Bright Lights," which casts her as a stage actress basking in her last appearance before retiring to married life with a rich swain. Unfortunately, flashbacks show that her past wasn't that pretty...and it's about to catch up with her. Frank Fay, Noah Beery co-star under Michael Curtiz's direction; look for a debuting John Carradine. AKA: "Adventures in Africa." Then, "The Reckless Hour" casts her as a shopgirl left with child and embittered by playboy cad Walter Byron, with only the kind attentions of artist Conrad Nagel between her and complete ruin. Joan Blondell, H.B. Warner co-star. 140 min. total. Standard; Soundtrack: English Dolby Digital mono.
