Maurice Leblanc's cunning gentleman thief was brought to engaging life in this pair of M-G-M mysteries. John Barrymore inhabits the title role in "Arsene Lupin" (1932), as the suave bandit's cat-and-mouse games with a canny Parisian inspector (Lionel Barrymore) lead to a scheme to lift the Mona Lisa from the Louvre. First screen pairing for the Barrymore brothers co-stars Karen Morley, Tully Marshall, John Miljan. Then, Melvyn Douglas takes over in "Arsene Lupin Returns" (1938), where Lupin gets locked in a shipboard war of wills with a security expert (Warren William) trying to give safe passage to a priceless gem. Virginia Bruce, John Halliday, Monty Woolley co-star. 165 min. total. Standard; Soundtrack: English Dolby Digital mono.
