Debuting director Elia Kazan helmed this heart-tugging adaptation of Betty Smith’s classic novel of 13-year-old Irish-American Francie Nolan (Peggy Ann Garner) growing up in the crowded tenements of New York. Her closest relationship is with her charming, but alcoholic, father Johnny (Best Supporting Actor-winner James Dunn), and while she resents her mother (Dorothy McGuire), tragic developments lead the girl to discover her parents' true worth. Co-stars Joan Blondell, Lloyd Nolan, James Gleason. 128 min. Standard; Soundtrack: English.
