Agnès Varda in California (Criterion Collection - Criterion Collection - Eclipse Series 43)
In her first American effort, Agnès Varda tracked down her never-before-seen "Uncle Yanco" (1967), a Greek immigrant living a hippie's life in Sausalito. In "Black Panthers" (1968), Varda trained her camera on an Oakland protest rally over the imprisonment of Huey Newton; Bobby Seale, H. Rap Brown, Stokely Carmichael, Eldridge Cleaver appear. "Lions Love (...And Lies)" (1969) follows a trio of party people (Warhol regular Viva, "Hair" co-creators James Rado and Gerome Ragni) on a revelatory idyll in a Hollywood Hills mansion. Varda surveys the murals dotting the Los Angeles cityscape, and the artists who created them, in "Mur Murs" (1980). A French divorcée (Sabine Mamou) canvases L.A. to find lodging for herself and her son (Varda's son, Mathieu Demy) in "Documenteur" (1981). 5 hrs. total on three discs. Standard/Widescreen; Soundtracks: English Dolby Digital mono, French Dolby Digital mono; Subtitles: English. In French with English subtitles/Filmed in English.
