In '70s Texas, the robbery spree of youthful lovers/thrill criminals Bob (Casey Affleck) and Ruth (Rooney Mara) ends with a shootout in which she wounds a young lawman (Ben Foster), and he─aware she's pregnant─takes the rap. Four years later, Ben breaks jail to meet the daughter he's never seen, and Ruth─now used to quiet motherhood─is unsure of how much she desires the reunion.
