Before the Nickelodeon: The Early Cinema of Edwin S. Porter
(1982)
Largely forgotten today, pioneering cameraman/director and Edison associate Edwin S. Porter's innovative use of narrative stories and intercutting and editing of scenes made him the top filmmaker of the 20th century's first decade. This documentary look at Porter's life and career features more than a dozen examples of his work, including the seminal "The Great Train Robbery" (1903) and the complete shorts "The Sunken Battleship 'Maine'" (1898), "Jack and the Beanstalk" (1902), "Life of an American Fireman" (1903), and others. Silent screen veteran Blanche Sweet narrates. 60 min. Standard; Soundtrack: music score; bonus shorts "Waiting at the Church" (1906), "Life of a Cowboy" (1906), "Uncle Josh at the Moving Picture Show" (1902). Silent with music score.
