Agnes White (Ashley Judd) is a lonely waitress holed up in a decrepit motel who lives in constant fear of her ex-husband, Jerry (Harry Connick, Jr.). She begins to feel hopeful after starting a romance with a war veteran drifter (Michael Shannon), who’s convinced bugs are infesting his body.
