The Documentaries of Louis Malle (Criterion Collection - Eclipse Series 2)
Apart from cinematic achievements such as "Pretty Baby" and "Atlantic City," French director Louis Malle amassed an impressive roster of nonfiction films. This six-disc collection of Malle documentaries includes the short "Vive Le Tour" (1962), concerning the Tour de France; "Phantom India" (1969), originally broadcast on European television, provides a deeply felt and beautiful appraisal of the Indian countryside; "Humain, Trop Humain" (1974) profiles French automobile factory workers; "Place de la Republique" (1974) observes everyday life on a French street corner; Malle surveys the immigrant experience in America, as newcomers dream of life, liberty, "And the Pursuit of Happiness" (1986); Malle finds economic hardship in "God's Country" (1986), as Minnesota farmers struggle in Reagan's America. Also includes "Calcutta." 13 2/3 hrs. total. Soundtrack: French Dolby Digital mono; Subtitles: English. In French with English subtitles.
