Memories of Underdevelopment (Criterion Collection)
(1968)
While his family fled Castro’s Cuba after the Bay of Pigs, well-off, disaffected intellectual Sergio (Sergio Corrieri) opted to stay behind, wandering Havana’s streets in search of distraction and sexual conquests. The ambivalent idler’s involvement with a teenager (Daisy Granados), though, might prove his undoing. Intriguing historical snapshot from Tomás Gutiérrez Alea ("Strawberry and Chocolate") co-stars Eslinda Núñez, Omar Valdés, René de la Cruz. 98 min. Widescreen; Soundtrack: English; Subtitles: Spanish; bonus documentary "Titon: From Havana to ‘Guantanamera’" (2008); featurettes; theatrical trailer. Two-disc set. In Spanish with English subtitles.
