Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters (Criterion Collection)
(1985)
In 1970, Yukio Mishima (Ken Ogata)--postwar Japan’s most estimable man of letters, and a fervent nationalist--led four members of his personal militia in a raid upon a Tokyo army base in a bid to reinstall the Emperor as head of state. Writer-director Paul Schrader’s ambitious effort intersperses dramatizations of the author’s major works with chronicles of his life and of the failed coup that ended with his ritual suicide. Yasosuke Bando, Kenji Sawada, Toshiyuki Nagashima also star. 120 min. Widescreen; Soundtrack: Japanese DTS HD stereo Master Audio; Subtitles; English; audio commentary: English narration tracks; bonus documentary "The Strange Case of Yukio Mishima" (1985); featurettes; theatrical trailer. In Japanese with English subtitles.
