Charlie Chaplin’s most out-of-character screen role was as Henri Verdoux, a laid-off banker in 1930s Paris who finds a way to provide for his wife and child by marrying wealthy widows and then murdering them. This wickedly dark comedy, based on a script by Orson Welles, co-stars Mady Correll, Robert Lewis, and a delightful Martha Raye as the most difficult of Verdoux’s victims. 124 min.
