In her screen debut, Diana Ross is stunning as jazz and blues singer Billie Holiday in "Lady Sings the Blues" (1972). Told in flashback, the film chronicles Lady Day's rough road to stardom, from her days working in a Harlem bordello and her encounters with racism in the predominantly white entertainment industry to the drug abuse that would ultimately lead to her downfall. With Billy Dee Williams and Richard Pryor. Songs include the title tune, "My Man," "I Cried for You," and more. Then, Ms. Ross delivers a powerhouse performance in the drama "Mahogany" (1974), as a department store secretary who rises out of a Chicago ghetto to become a world-famous fashion model and designer. But when she gets caught up in the web of a Machiavellian photographer (Anthony Perkins), her desire for superstardom threatens her relationship with her politician boyfriend (Billy Dee Williams). Can she find success and happiness? With Jean-Pierre Aumont. Includes the hit "Do You Know Where You're Going To?" 4 1/4 hrs. total. Widescreen; Soundtrack: English.
