Bitter Moon (1992)
Having taken a Mediterranean cruise ship bound for Istanbul, Britisher Nigel Dobson (Hugh Grant) was hoping to strike some kind of spark in his staid union with wife Fiona (Kristin Scott Thomas). He’d find more than he could deal with as he encountered a mysterious beauty (Emmanuelle Seigner) and her quadriplegic husband (Peter Coyote), whose candor about their sadomasochistic relationship would lead all down a dangerous path. Roman Polanski’s ultra-kinky drama co-stars Victor Banerjee. 139 min. C/Rtg: R
Death And The Maiden (1994)
Roman Polanski’s intense film of Ariel Dorfman’s play stars Sigourney Weaver as Paulina Escobar, a South American woman who believes that her lawyer husband Gerardo’s (Stuart Wilson) associate is the man who tortured and raped her years earlier. Against her husband’s wishes, Paulina takes justice into her own hands, holding the man captive in order to force him to confess. Ben Kingsley, Jorge Cruz also star; based on the 1990 play by Ariel Dorfman. 103 min. C/Rtg: R
The Ninth Gate (1999)
In Roman Polanski’s haunting thriller, Johnny Depp is rare book dealer Dean Corso, who’s hired by a wealthy collector (Frank Langella), owner of a strange 17th-century occult tome whose engravings were said to be done by Satan, to track down the other two existing copies. Corso’s worldwide search has him facing threats on his life, two mysterious women, and a demonic conspiracy. With Lena Olin, Emmanuelle Seigner, Barbara Jefford. 133 min. C/Rtg: R
Roman Polanski: Wanted And Desired (2008)
The tumultuous life and career of famed director Roman Polanski are the focus of this striking documentary. Accused of rape and other offenses against a minor in 1977, Polanski fled to France a year later before his sentencing. Through interviews with lawyers involved in the case, members of the media, and the victim herself, the film examines the often difficult relationship between justice and celebrity. 100 min. C/Rtg: NR
