Navajeros (1980)
Though only 15, street punk El Jaro (José Luis Manzano) had a long rap sheet--and he was always looking to add on alongside his crew of young toughs. Though finding a too-patient protector and lover in much-older hooker Mercedes (Isela Vega), his efforts to impress his buddy's junkie sister (Verónica Castro) might bring him heat from both dealers and cops that he can't deal with. Eloy de la Iglesia's gritty, fact-inspired quinqui staple also stars Jaime Garza, Enrique San Francisco, José Sacristán. In Spanish with English subtitles. C/Rtg: NR
El Pico (1983)
Bilbao school buddies Paco (José Luis Manzano), son of a right-wing Civil Guard officer (José Manuel Cervino), and Urko (Javier Garcia), whose dad (Luis Iriondo) is a leftist politician, would seem to have little on common. The one thing they did share was heroin addiction--and as they turned to dealing to feed their habits, family heartache and tragedy wouldn't be far behind. Searing quinqui opus from Eloy de la Iglesia co-stars Ovidi Montllor, Enrique San Francisco, Lali Espinet. 105 min. In Spanish with English subtitles. C/Rtg: NR
El Pico 2 (1984)
No-less-intense follow-up to "El Pico" from Eloy de la Iglesia finds Paco (José Luis Manzano) taken to Madrid by his dad (Fernando Guillén) for rehab. It's not far enough, however, for the ghosts of his past crimes not to follow--and after he winds up in prison, his falling in with jailhouse addicts might combine with his father's underhanded efforts to free him to foment further sorrow. Lali Espinet, Jaume Valls, Rafaela Aparicio, Agustín González also star. 120 min. In Spanish with English subtitles. C/Rtg: NR
Widescreen; Soundtrack: Spanish; Subtitles: English; audio commentary; featurettes; theatrical trailers.
