Serendipity (2001)
After a chance meeting and a spontaneous date, Jonathan (John Cusack) and Sara (Kate Beckinsale) exchange phone numbers--sort of. He scrawls his on a five-dollar bill, while hers is written in a used book. Should either of them happen upon the other’s number, Sara says, this will prove they were meant for each other. But when seven years go by and marriage looms for both of them, will destiny intervene and finally bring them together? Romantic comedy also stars Jeremy Piven and Molly Shannon. 90 min. C/Rtg: PG-13
Mean Girls (2004)
Tina Fey scripted and co-stars in this sharp comedy, based on the book by Rosalind Wiseman. Teenager Cady Heron (Lindsay Lohan), after being home-schooled in Africa by her zoologist parents, suddenly winds up in a suburban Illinois high school. But not even growing up in the jungle could have prepared Cady for the struggles she now faces, especially when she starts dating the most popular girl in school’s ex-boyfriend. With Rachel McAdams, Lacey Chabert, Tim Meadows, Amy Poehler. 96 min. C/Rtg: PG-13
Last Holiday (2006)
Queen Latifah stars in this warmly funny remake of the 1950 Alec Guinness film, playing store clerk Georgia Byrd, who, faced with the news that she will soon pass away from an incurable illness, embraces life to the fullest. Traveling to a swanky Czech resort, Georgia meets a legendary chef (Gérard Depardieu) she has always admired. In short order, everyone at the resort soon comes to regard Georgia’s life-loving attitude as a true inspiration. LL Cool J, Timothy Hutton, Alicia Witt also star. 111 min. C/Rtg: PG-13
