The adventure was still there, but the tone was much lighter in this sequel. Showman Carl Denham (Robert Armstrong) returns to Skull Island in search of a hidden treasure. It’s the showdown monster fans dreamed of, as the great ape is found alive and well (!) in the South Seas and brought to Japan, where he has an all-out slugfest atop Mt. King Kong Escapes (1967)

To be precise, the giant ape escaped from "King Kong vs. Godzilla" and into this Toho/Rankin-Bass co-production loosely based on the ’60s cartoon series. Abducted from his island home by the evil Dr. Who (!) to help mine a rare radioactive element near the North Pole, Kong rebels and soon finds himself battling his robotic rival, Mechani-Kong, atop the Tokyo Tower. King Kong (2005)
