Graveyards of Honor: Two Films by Kinji Fukasaku & Takashi Miike
(1975)
From director Kinji Fukasaku ("Street Mobster") comes "Graveyard of Honor" (1975), the highly stylized, fact-inspired Japanese mockumentary examining the downward spiral of a sociopathic thug. While working for one of Japan’s biggest crime families in the '40s, Rikio Ishikawa (Tetsuya Watari) finds himself committing a variety of brutal acts as he desperately attempts to make his way through life. Tatsuo Umemiya, Eiji Gô also star. Takashi Miike’s 2002 remake of "Graveyard of Honor" adds his trademark sense of the grotesque to an already high-intensity plotline, the story of a humble dishwasher (Goro Kishitani) who becomes a power player for the Yakuza after saving the life of an influential boss. Unfortunately, the man’s undisciplined temper and thirst for debauchery get him into deep trouble. Narumi Arimori, Daisuke Ryu also star. 3 3/4 hrs. total on two discs. In Japanese with English subtitles. BW&C/Rtg: NR
