Werner Herzog's bizarre parable "Even Dwarfs Started Small" (1970) follows a group of dwarfs on a prison isle who run amok in their governor's absence. The documentary "Land of Silence and Darkness" (1971) follows blind- and deaf-since-adolescence Fini Straubinger, who counsels the similarly afflicted. Three German eccentrics go on an amusing quest into the American heartland in "Strószek" (1977). A repressed mil itary orderly (Kinski) is driven to madness and murder in "Woyzeck" (1979). The documentary "Ballad of the Little Soldier" (1984) follows the strife of Nicaragua's Miskito Indians under the Sandinista regime. Kinski is an 1800s Brazilian bandit who is sent to Africa to try to revive the slave trade in "Cobra Verde" (1987). Herzog reflects on his contentious collaborations with Klaus Kinski in "My Best Fiend" (1999). Thirteen-disc set also includes "Fata Morgana," "The Enigma of Kaspar Hauser," "Heart of Glass," "Nosferatu The Vampyre," "Aguirre: The Wrath of God," "Fitzcarraldo," "Where the Green Ants Dream," "Lessons of Darkness," and "Little Dieter Needs to Fly."
