To escape war-torn Poland, former concentration camp inmate Viktoria Kowelska (Valentina Cortese) adopts the identity of a dead fellow prisoner who has a son living with a wealthy aunt in San Francisco. Viktoria moves into the family's mansion, and, after the old woman dies, inherits her fortune.
