At Midnight I'll Take Your Soul (1964)
Brazil’s first entry in the horror film genre comes courtesy of writer/director/star José Mojica Marins, making his debut as deranged, black-clad cemetery worker Coffin Joe. When his wife is unable to have children, Joe murders her and sets out on a gore-filled mission to find a suitable "mother" so he can continue his twisted legacy. 82 min. In Portuguese with English subtitles. BW/Rtg: NR
This Night I'll Possess Your Corpse (1967)
The sequel to "At Midnight I’ll Take Your Soul" finds Coffin Joe (José Mojica Marins) still searching for a "perfect woman" to bear him a "perfect child." During his travels he takes some time to crush people’s heads, put 50 tarantulas on innocent women and--in an extended color sequence--visit Hell to witness all sorts of atrocities. 109 min. In Portuguese with English subtitles. BW&C/Rtg: NR
The Strange World of Coffin Joe (1968)
A trio of terrifying tales from the demonic Coffin Joe (José Mojica Marins) about a strange dollmaker whose creations look "almost" real, the world of necrophilia, and a doctor (Marins) out to prove his theory that love is dead. 80 min. In Portuguese with English subtitles. BW/Rtg: NR
The Awakening Of The Beast (1970)
Who better to make a horror film warning against the dangers of drug abuse than Brazilian shock icon José Mojica Marins, alias Coffin Joe? This mondo mockumentary boasts ultra-violence, nudity, hallucinogenic imagery, and out-and-out ghastliness among its "highlights." 100 min. In Portuguese with English subtitles. BW&C/Rtg: NR
The End Of Man (1971)
José Mojica Marins gets serious as he explores faith and mysticism, playing a preacher with supposed supernatural powers. He has the ability to wake the dead and cure handicapped people, and is seen joining in the world of hippie psychedelia. Weird, weird stuff from the creator of "Coffin Joe." 79 min. In Portuguese with English subtitles. BW/Rtg: NR
When The Gods Fall Asleep (1972)
José Mojica Marins' sequel to "The End of Man" finds a preacher on another mission to save mankind when the gods fall asleep and evil takes over the world. After his release from an asylum, the preacher tries to save society by chastising manipulative women, interrupting Macuba rituals and virgin sacrifices, and stopping duels. 82 min. In Portuguese with English subtitles. BW/Rtg: NR
The Strange Hostel Of Naked Pleasures (1975)
José Mojica Marins produced and stars in this eerie epic in which he plays the owner of a haunted hostel where guests make their wildest and most terrifying dreams come true. Not for the squeamish, this surrealist shocker was co-directed by "Coffin Joe" disciple Marcello Motta. 81 min. In Portuguese with English subtitles. C/Rtg: NR
Hellish Flesh (1977)
José Mojica Marins is a scientist trying to create an acid formula that can dissolve a human body. When his wife's lover splashes the formula on his face and destroys his lab, a plot for revenge is set in motion. In this deranged outing, Marins adds actual scenes of eye surgery he underwent. 85 min. In Portuguese with English subtitles. C/Rtg: NR
Hallucinations Of A Deranged Mind (1978)
Shudder expert Coffin Joe haunts the dreams of a young man (which gave the producer an opportunity to inject scenes from this sicko series that were banned by Brazilian authorities). From sexy to all-out gross-out, this film is not a hallucination. Just keep repeating: "It's only a Coffin Joe movie! It's only a Coffin Joe movie!" 86 min. In Portuguese with English subtitles. BW&C/Rtg: NR
Embodiment Of Evil (2008)
These words perfectly sum up Brazil’s demented gravedigger, Coffin Joe (director/co-writer/star José Mojica Marins). Released from a prison psych ward after 40 years, the monstrously manicured madman and his hunchbacked aide, Bruno, renew their bloody search for the "perfect woman" to bear Joe’s child, but the law and a fanatical monk are out to stop them. Rui Rezende, Cristina Aché also star. 94 min. In Portuguese with English subtitles. C/Rtg: NR
