Dorothy McGuire gives an emotional performance as Ellen Bowker, a sickly woman with a critical heart condition who believes that she's destined to spend her life alone. When her father learns that she has a deep affection for Dan Pierce (Van Johnson), he pays Pierce to marry Ellen, much to the dismay of Ellen's rival (Ruth Roman).
