Director Abel Gance makes a passionate anti-war statement with this stunning French silent melodrama. A poet in love with a married woman from his village befriends her brutish husband while both serve in the trenches during World War I...but the conflict takes a toll on all three. Includes the famous--and controversial--sequence in which Gance included actual disfigured veterans as ghosts. Restored version includes a new score by Robert Israel; Romuald Joubé, Maryse Dauvray star. 168 min. on two discs. Standard; Soundtrack: music score; bonus short "Fighting the War" (1916). Silent with music score.
