Jeanette MacDonald & Nelson Eddy Collection: Volume One
Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy first teamed in the lively Victor Herbert operetta "Naughty Marietta" (1935), about the romance that blossoms between a swaggering soldier and a French princess fleeing an arranged marriage. Frank Morgan, Elsa Lanchester co-star; songs include "Live for Today," "Tramp, Tramp, Tramp." "Rose Marie" (1936) finds a Canadian opera star (MacDonald) covertly helping her outlaw brother (James Stewart) evade capture, while a Mountie (Eddy) is determined to bring him in. Allan Jones, David Niven co-star; score includes "Indian Love Call," "Just for You." After a rising diva (MacDonald) accepts the marriage proposal of her mentor (John Barrymore), she falls for a penniless singer (Eddy). "Maytime" (1937) co-stars Herman Bing; score includes "Czarita," "Santa Lucia." A dashing bandit (Eddy) didn't count on having his heart stolen by a saloon keeper (MacDonald), and he risks capture to court her, in "The Girl of the Golden West" (1938). Walter Pidgeon, Buddy Ebsen co-star; score includes "Senorita," "Who Are We to Say." 7 2/3 hrs. total on four discs. Standard; Soundtrack: English Dolby Digital mono.
