When a young black man is arrested for the rape of a white woman, tensions in a small Southern town go past the boiling point, and a showdown between the law and the Ku Klux Klan is inevitable. Lee Marvin stars as the sheriff trying desperately to keep the peace, and Richard Burton is a local landowner whose opposition of the Klan lands him in the middle of the conflict.
