Henry V (1944)
Made in England during the German Blitz, Laurence Olivier’s adaptation of the Shakespeare drama is a remarkable epic that combines screen and stage techniques. Olivier stars as the sybaritic 15th-century monarch who faces his test of fire when he leads England into battle against France. With Leslie Banks, Robert Newton, Renee Asherson, Ernest Thesiger. 138 min. C/Rtg: NR
Hamlet (1948)
Five Oscars, including Best Actor and Picture, went to Laurence Olivier’s turn as the Melancholy Dane. Stunning locations and black-and-white photography add to the timeless drama. Basil Sydney, Jean Simmons, Felix Aylmer, Norman Wooland head the impressive supporting cast; look quickly for Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee. 153 min. BW/Rtg: NR
Richard III (1955)
Laurence Olivier (who also directed) is unforgettable in the twisted, treacherous title role in this elaborate adaptation of Shakespeare’s gripping royal drama. Believing he should occupy England’s throne rather than his brother, Edward IV (Cedric Hardwicke), Richard sets into motion a complex plot to displace him that ultimately leads to tragedy. Superlative cast includes Ralph Richardson, John Gielgud, Claire Bloom. Restored version; 158 min. C/Rtg: NR
Standard/Widescreen; Soundtrack: English LPCM mono; Subtitles: English (SDH); audio commentary; video essays; interviews; theatrical trailers; photo gallery; more.
