Writer-director Pedro Costa's trilogy of films set in the slums of Lisbon's Fontaínhas district begins with "Ossos" (1997), the story of a suicidal teenage girl (Mariya Lipkina) who makes the mistake of trusting the care of her newborn child to its father (Nuno Vaz). With Vanda Duarte, Isabel Ruth. Next, "In Vanda's Room" (2000), Duarte plays a drug-addicted woman whose self-destructive behaviors are only part of a despairing portrait of the impoverished community around her. With Lena Duarte, Pedro Lanban. Finally, despite the title "Colossal Youth" (2006), Costa's film focuses on the life of an elderly man (Ventura) who relates to his neighbors as he might his own children. With Beatriz Duarte, Gustavo Sumpta. 7 hrs. total. Standard and Widescreen (Enhanced); Soundtrack: Portuguese Dolby Digital stereo; Subtitles: English; audio commentary; interviews; outtakes; documentary; photo gallery; theatrical trailers; bonus shorts "Tarrafal," "The Rabbit Hunters"; more. In Portuguese with English subtitles. Four-disc set.
