King Creole (1958)
One of Elvis Presley’s finer acting roles came in this drama based on a novel by Harold Robbins. Elvis plays Danny Fisher, a high school dropout who takes a job at a New Orleans nightclub owned by gangster Maxie Fields (Walter Matthau). When Danny’s talent as a singer gets him hired at another joint, Fields wants him back--and he might not take "no" for an answer. With Carolyn Jones, Dolores Hart, Vic Morrow; songs include "Hard-Headed Woman," "Crawfish," and the title tune. 115 min. BW/Rtg: NR
G.I. Blues (1960)
For his first movie after serving in the Army, Elvis found himself back in uniform, playing singing tank crewman Tulsa McLean, who, while stationed in Germany, makes a bet with his buddies that he can woo leggy nightclub singer Lili (Juliet Prowse), and winds up falling for her. Co-stars Robert Ivers, James Douglas, Letícia Román. Songs include "Wooden Heart," "Pocketful of Rainbows," "Frankfurt Special," and the title tune. 103 min. C/Rtg: PG
Blue Hawaii (1961)
Elvis Presley sings 14 songs and still manages to drive sightseers around the islands in golf carts in this lush musical. Back home in Hawaii after being discharged from the Army, Chad Gates (Presley) is pressured to work with his father in the fruit business. Instead, Chad takes a much more enjoyable gig as a tour guide with his girlfriend’s agency. Angela Lansbury, Joan Blackman, Roland Winters also star. Features the title tune, "Can’t Help Falling in Love," "Rock-a-Hula Baby," and more. 101 min. C/Rtg: PG
Girls! Girls! Girls! (1962)
There’s also plenty of Elvis! Elvis! Elvis! in this tuneful romp with the King as a tuna fisherman in Hawaii who lands a nightclub-singing gig to try and get his late father’s boat out of hock. Along with what the title promises (with Stella Stevens and Laurel Goodwin among the girls), you’ll get lots of Songs! Songs! Songs! (including "Return to Sender," "The Nearness of You," and "Song of the Shrimp"). Also stars Jeremy Slate, Benson Fong, Robert Strauss. 98 min. C/Rtg: PG
Fun In Acapulco (1963)
After a big-top accident leaves him with a fear of heights, trapeze performer Mike Windgren (Elvis Presley) heads South of the Border and gets a job as a lifeguard/singer at an Acapulco resort. But will a rivalry with cliff diver Moreno (Alejandro Rey) for the attentions of luscious social director Margarita (Ursula Andress) force Mike to confront his fears? Songs include "Viva el Amor," "No Room to Rhumba in a Sports Car," and the big hit "Bossa Nova Baby." 97 min. C/Rtg: PG
Roustabout (1964)
After he’s run off the road and his motorcycle is smashed, Charlie Rogers (Elvis Presley) signs on as a worker with a travelling carnival run by Maggie Morgan (Barbara Stanwyck) and eventually becomes the show’s singing star (performing "Poison Ivy League," "Carnival Time," "One-Track Heart," and more) in this song-filled drama that also stars Joan Freeman, Leif Erickson, Sue Ann Langdon; look for Raquel Welch in her film debut. 101 min. C/Rtg: PG
Paradise, Hawaiian Style (1966)
Back in the Aloha State once more, Elvis this time is Rick Richards, an ex-airline pilot who starts a charter helicopter sightseeing service and finds himself coping with pretty tourists, FAA officials, and a chopper full of dogs! And remember, "Last one out of the water is a papaya picker!" Suzanna Leigh, James Shigeta co-star. Songs include "A Dog’s Life," "Sand Castles," and "Bill Bailey, Won’t You Please Come Home?" 91 min. C/Rtg: G
Easy Come, Easy Go (1967)
When Navy underwater demolitions expert Ted Jackson (Elvis Presley) finds gold in a sunken wreck during his final service dive, he comes back with an oddball crew to recover the treasure. Along with the high seas action, there’s a visit to a beatnik discotheque "at a freak-out that’s out of sight!" Soundtrack includes "Love Machine," "I’ll Take Love," and the title tune; with Dodie Marshall, Pat Harrington, Elsa Lanchester, and--in his screen farewell--Frank McHugh. 94 min. C/Rtg: NR
