John Turturro is disheveled but brilliant Russian-born chess master Sascha Luzhin, who arrives at an Italian lakeside resort to take part in a world championship tournament, but winds up falling in love with fellow guest Natalia Katkov (Emily Watson). Troubles in the form of Natalia's status-hungry mother and Sascha's scheming ex-mentor threaten his happiness on two fronts, in this adaptation of a Nabokov novel.
