Merton Gill, small-town delivery boy with big Hollywood dreams, is the subject of these comedic romps based on Harry Leon Wilson's novel and the Broadway play by George S. Kaufman and Marc Connelly. First, Merton's (Stuart Erwin) attempt to become a cowboy actor fails but leads to a promising career as a slapstick comedy star known as Whoop Ryder, in "Make Me a Star." With Joan Blondell, ZaSu Pitts. Then, "Merton of the Movies" stars Red Skelton as the likable bumpkin who is whisked away to Tinseltown after he foils a robbery. Merton manages to land a job as a comedic actor but doesn't realize the joke is on him. Virginia O'Brien, Gloria Grahame also star. 168 min. total on two discs. Standard; Soundtrack: English Dolby Digital mono.
