Miracle On 34th Street (1947)
Perennial holiday film classic relates the tale of "Kris Kringle," a Macy’s department store Santa Claus (Edmund Gwenn, in an Academy Award-winning performance) claiming to be the genuine article--much to the consternation of pragmatic store event director Doris Walker (Maureen O’Hara) who is raising her daughter (Natalie Wood) not to believe in fantasy. But when the gift-giver is declared insane, a good-hearted lawyer (John Payne) fights to prove that the man truly is jolly old St. Nicholas. 96 min. BW&C/Rtg: NR
The Silver Chalice (1954)
In his film debut, Paul Newman portrays Basil the Defender, a 1st-century Greek artisan sold into slavery by his evil uncle. When his gifts as a sculptor are discovered, Basil is commissioned to cast a silver replica of the cup Jesus used at the Last Supper. Jack Palance, Pier Angeli, Virginia Mayo, Lorne Greene, Natalie Wood, and E.G. Marshall also star in this sprawling costume epic based on the novel by Thomas B. Costain. 135 min. C/Rtg: NR
Rebel Without A Cause (1955)
James Dean became a national symbol for ‘50s teen angst in director Nicholas Ray’s powerful character study of alienated youth. Dean stars as new kid in town Jim Stark, who faces problems at school, deals with his parents’ constant arguing, participates in knife fights and chicken races, and finds friendship with fellow outcast Plato (Sal Mineo) and the beautiful Judy (Natalie Wood). With Jim Backus, Dennis Hopper. 111 min. C/Rtg: PG-13
The Searchers (1956)
Often cited as one of the most complex and greatest Westerns ever made, director John Ford’s moody tale stars John Wayne as Ethan Edwards, a Civil War veteran who returns to his settler brother’s West Texas home and finds that his family has been attacked by the Comanche. Joined by a half-breed youth (Jeffrey Hunter) raised by the family, Edwards begins an all-consuming search for his surviving niece (Natalie Wood), now living with her captors. Ward Bond, Vera Miles also star; based on Alan Le May’s 1954 novel. 119 min. C/Rtg: NR
Splendor In The Grass (1961)
Natalie Wood is the fragile Deanie Loomis and a debuting Warren Beatty is gridiron star Bud Stamper, a pair of high school lovers in 1920s Kansas, whose inner struggles to retain a pure and virtuous love for one another lead them only to destructive ends. Written for the screen by playwright William Inge and directed by Elia Kazan, the poignant drama co-stars Pat Hingle, Audrey Christie, Barbara Loden, Zohra Lampert, Sandy Dennis. 124 min. C/Rtg: NR
Romeo And Juliet (1968)
Director Franco Zeffirelli’s exceptional version of Shakespeare’s immortal tale casts young unknowns Leonard Whiting and Olivia Hussey as the teenage Veronese lovers--Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet--crossed by the stars and doomed by the enmity between their families. Co-stars Michael York, Milo O’Shea, John McEnery, Pat Heywood, Robert Stephens; narrated by Laurence Olivier. 138 min. C/Rtg: PG
