Perry Mason: The Original Warner Bros. Movies Collection
(1934)
Warren William was the first to bring Erle Stanley Gardner's savvy attorney to big-screen life in "The Case of the Howling Dog" (1934), as an eccentric new client vanishes after making neighbor Mary Astor his sole beneficiary. Next, Mason (William) aids a friend (Margaret Lindsay) whose presumed-dead first husband (Errol Flynn, in his U.S. debut) reappears and is subsequently murdered in "The Case of the Curious Bride" (1935). When a beauty contest promoter with a penchant for skipping out on the winners turns up dead, Perry (William) has to crack "The Case of the Lucky Legs" (1935). Genevieve Tobin, Lyle Talbot co-star. William's last outing finds Perry's wedding to Della Street (Claire Dodd) interrupted by a scandal rag publisher's slaying in "The Case of the Velvet Claws" (1936). Perry (Ricardo Cortez) discovers that three murders are linked by a feline's cries in "The Case of the Black Cat" (1936). And Mason (Donald Woods) is engaged by an Australian cleric to look into a potentially phony heiress in "The Case of the Stuttering Bishop" (1937). Ann Dvorak, Anne Nagel co-star. 7 1/4 hrs. total on two discs. Standard; Soundtrack: English Dolby Digital mono.
