Picnic (1955)
Superb adaptation of William Inge’s play stars William Holden as handsome but aimless drifter Hal Carter, who makes a Labor Day weekend stop in the small Kansas town of rich college buddy Alan Benson (Cliff Robertson). Once there, he becomes involved with Alan’s gorgeous fiancée Madge (Kim Novak), while his presence stirs up passions within Madge’s mother (Betty Field), insecure bookworm sister (Susan Strasberg), and repressed schoolteacher boarder (Rosalind Russell). 115 min. C/Rtg: PG
There’s Always Tomorrow (1955)
Toy manufacturer Clifford Groves (Fred MacMurray) may have found success, but with a spouse (Joan Bennett) and kids who take him for granted, fulfillment is something else entirely. Can he deal with the temptation when now-divorced ex-flame Norma Miller Vale (Barbara Stanwyck) re-enters his life...or the fallout when his son sees them together and assumes the worst? Ross Hunter-Douglas Sirk meller also stars Pat Crowley, Jane Darwell. 85 min. BW/Rtg: NR
