The Purge (2013)
In the near future, the corporations that govern the United States have devised a way for citizens to release negative energy. It’s called "the Purge," an annual 12-hour period during which all crimes are deemed legal. When James Sandin (Ethan Hawke) and his family provide sanctuary for a stranger in their locked-down home, they find themselves surrounded by bloodthirsty killers who want the man dead. Lena Headey, Max Burkholder also star in this terrifying sci-fi suspenser. 86 min. C/Rtg: R
The Purge: Anarchy (2014)
Well, it’s that time of year again when the powers that be suspend law and order for 12 hours so we can all blow off a little steam. This time, an off-duty cop (Frank Grillo) on a vengeance hunt, a couple (Zach Gilford, Kiele Sanchez) trapped on the road at midnight, and a mother (Carmen Ejogo) and daughter (Zoë Soul) torn from their apartment band together for survival. Stunning sequel co-stars John Beasley, Noel Gugliemi. 104 min. C/Rtg: R
The Purge: Election Year (2016)
The third chapter in the successful film series finds former LAPD sergeant Leo Barnes (Frank Grillo) working as chief of security for Senator Charlie Roan (Elizabeth Mitchell), a presidential hopeful running on a promise to end the Purge. But as the 12-hour period of legalized mayhem begins, Barnes and Roan must try and stay alive on the streets of Washington, D.C. while pro-Purge forces try to eliminate the would-be POTUS. With Mykelti Williamson, Joseph Julian Soria, and Edwin Hodge. 109 min. C/Rtg: R
The First Purge (2018)
Ever wonder how allowing 12 hours of punishment-free crime and violence once every year seemed like a good idea in the first place? This prequel entry in the hit action/horror film series depicts the initial Purge as a sociological experiment intended to be limited to the Staten Island area. Opposing it are an idealistic activist (Lex Scott Davis) and her ex-boyfriend (Y’lan Noel), a drug dealer who sees it as a potential threat to his business. Joivan Wade, Mugga, Patch Darragh, and Marisa Tomei co-star. 97 min. C/Rtg: R
The Forever Purge (2021)
Well, the free and fair election came and went, and the new administration wasted no time in striking the notorious suspension of martial law from the books. However, there’re some corners of the nation where the locals are keeping the Purge alive and well...such as the Texas ranch where a Mexican couple (Ana de la Reguera, Tenoch Huerta) fleeing a drug cartel mistakenly think they’ll find safety. Fifth and final--perhaps--franchise entry co-stars Josh Lucas, Will Patton, Cassidy Freeman. 104 min. C/Rtg: R
Widescreen (Enhanced); Soundtracks: English Dolby Digital 5.1, French Dolby Digital 5.1, Spanish Dolby Digital 5.1; Subtitles: English (SDH), French, Spanish; featurettes; deleted scenes; theatrical trailer; more.
