It Came From Beneath The Sea (1955)
When a disabled nuclear submarine returns to its Pearl Harbor base with giant sea creature bits stuck in its hydroplanes, two marine biologists (Kenneth Tobey, Faith Domergue) determine atomic testing has awakened an undersea behemoth. The scientists try to stop the monster, now on its way to the Northern California coast, from having itself a little San Francisco treat, in this sci-fi classic with stop-motion animation by Ray Harryhausen. 79 min. BW/Rtg: NR
Earth vs. The Flying Saucers (1956)
The fabulous effects work of Ray Harryhausen highlights this thrilling sci-fi adventure about a fleet of alien spaceships that launches an attack on Earth. Instructed to gather the world’s leaders in Washington, D.C., in order to establish the aliens’ occupation of the planet, all hope for humanity seems lost. As the flying saucers descend on cities around the world, an American scientist races to develop a weapon that will repel the deadly invaders. Hugh Marlowe, Joan Taylor star. 83 min. BW&C/Rtg: PG-13
The 7th Voyage Of Sinbad (1958)
A much-requested film at Movies Unlimited, this spectacular fantasy based on the "One Thousand and One Nights" tale follows Sinbad the Sailor’s (Kerwin Matthews) battle against evil magician Sokurah (Torin Thatcher), who sends him on a dangerous quest to retrieve a lost magic lamp. See the giant Cyclops, the two-headed roc, the snake-woman, and other menaces, courtesy of animator Ray Harryhausen. Kathryn Grant, Richard Eyer, Alec Mango co-star. 88 min. C/Rtg: G
The 3 Worlds Of Gulliver (1960)
Ray Harryhausen’s special effects highlight this loose adaptation of Jonathan Swift’s fantasy classic. Kerwin Matthews is English adventurer Dr Lemuel Gulliver, who finds himself washed ashore the island of Lilliput, where pocket-sized humans live. With the emperor (Basil Sydney) seeing Gulliver as a threat, Gulliver takes off for the neighboring island of Brobdingnag, home to 60-foot giants, and faces a big squirrel, a large croc, and more. With June Thorburn, Jo Morrow. 99 min. C/Rtg: NR
Mysterious Island (1961)
Jules Verne’s 1874 novel about Civil War prisoners from the North who construct a gas balloon to escape captivity, then find themselves on a strange Pacific island populated by giant crabs and bees, prehistoric birds, and two allies--in the form of English ladies Mary Fairchild (Joan Greenwood) and her niece Elena (Beth Rogan)--is brought to startling, colorful life, thanks to Ray Harryhausen’s effects. Michael Craig, Michael Callan, Gary Merrill, and Herbert Lom as Captain Nemo co-star. 100 min. C/Rtg: NR
Jason And The Argonauts (1963)
The Greek mythological tale of Jason and the gods who oversee him is turned into an epic screen fantasy that is arguably special-effects wizard Ray Harryhausen’s finest hour. After he is denied his rightful place on the throne of Thessaly, Jason (Todd Armstrong) battles all manner of enemies--including harpies, the giant statue of Talos come to life, the seven-headed hydra, and an unstoppable army of skeleton warriors--to obtain the prized Golden Fleece. Honor Blackman, Nancy Kovack, Niall MacGinnis co-star. 104 min. C/Rtg: G
The Golden Voyage Of Sinbad (1973)
The mighty mariner embarks on a danger-filled quest to the lost island of Lemuria to help a kindly vizier find a fabled fountain of youth before an evil wizard can.
