Rumble Fish (1983)
Strikingly filmed in black and white, director Francis Ford Coppola’s powerful adaptation of the novel by S.E. Hinton (who co-scripted with Coppola) focuses on an alienated Midwest youth (Matt Dillon) whose life changes when the motorcycle-riding older brother (Mickey Rourke) he idolizes returns home. But while the younger brother romanticizes the gang life, he finds his sibling no longer wants any part of it. With Dennis Hopper, Diane Lane, Vincent Spano, Nicolas Cage, Larry Fishburne. 95 min. BW/Rtg: R
Gardens Of Stone (1987)
Based on the novel by Nicholas Proffitt, Francis Ford Coppola’s stirring look at stateside soldiers during Vietnam follows Sgt. Clell Hazard (James Caan) and Sgt. Major "Goody" Nelson (James Earl Jones), veteran non-commissioned officers who serve on the honor guard for military burials at Arlington National Cemetery. Hazard takes a young recruit (D.B. Sweeney) under his wing and tries to dissuade him from requesting frontline duty. With Mary Stuart Masterson, Anjelica Huston. 111 min. C/Rtg: R
