This three-disc collection of Sherlockian rarities features a pair of silent shorts, the British/French-made "The Copper Beeches" (1912), with Georges Tréville as Holmes, and Eille Norwood in "The Man with the Twisted Lip" (1921). Arthur Wontner has his first film turn as the Great Detective in "Sherlock Holmes' Fatal Hour" (1931), with Ian Fleming as Watson. AKA: "The Sleeping Cardinal." The sleuthing turns slapstick in five more shorts: the all-puppet "The Limejuice Mystery or Who Spat in Grandfather's Porridge" (1930), Olaf Hytten as Sheerluck Jones in "Lost in Limehouse" (1933), Cliff Edwards as Silo Dance in "Strange Case of Hennessy" (1933); the Columbia Hairluck Combs cartoon "The Case of the Screaming Bishop" (1944), and Professor Lightskull the chimp in "A Case of Hypnosis" (1952). Early TV depictions of Holmes include "Batman" butler Alan Napier in "The Speckled Band" (1949), John Longden in "The Man Who Disappeared" (1951), and Boris Karloff as the enigmatic "Mr. Mycroft" in "Sting of Death" (1955).
