Romance On The High Seas (1948)
Lively romance and music galore marked this marital infidelity farce that was Doris Day's screen debut. Mrs. Elvira Kent (Janis Paige) suspects husband Michael (Don DeFore) is cheating on her, and together they wind up on a Caribbean cruise where nightclub singer Georgia Garrett (Day) and private eye Peter Virgil (Jack Carson) get in the middle of the jealous couple's spying. Oscar Levant co-stars; songs include "Put 'Em in a Box," "It's Magic"; choreography by Busby Berkeley. 99 min. C/Rtg: NR
Calamity Jane (1953)
Doris Day shines as the Old West's sassy female sharpshooter in a rip-roarin' musical comedy. Calamity travels to Chicago to bring a famed singer back to the frontier town of Deadwood but instead returns with the woman's maid, who goes on to become a star and Calamity's rival for the attentions of a handsome Cavalry officer. With Philip Carey, Allyn Ann McLerie, and Howard Keel as "Wild Bill" Hickok; songs include "Secret Love" and "It's Harry I'm Planning to Marry." 101 min. C/Rtg: NR
Love Me Or Leave Me (1955)
Doris Day and James Cagney star in this glossy, gritty, song-filled biodrama of '20s singer Ruth Etting. Fired from her job in a Chicago dive, the beautiful Etting (Day) allows gangster Martin "the Gimp" Snyder (Cagney) to take charge of her career. As she begins to achieve success, she tries to free herself from the clutches of the controlling mobster--who is desperate to possess her as a romantic partner. With Cameron Mitchell, Robert Keith. 122 min. C/Rtg: NR
Please Don't Eat The Daisies (1960)
Based on playwright Jean Kerr’s collection of humorous essays, this pleasant comedy follows professor-turned-drama critic Larry Mackay (David Niven) and his wife Kate (Doris Day) as they pack up their brood and move from New York City to a dilapidated old house in the country. While Kate sets up their new home, Larry has his hands full dealing with an old friend (Richard Haydn) whose play he panned, as well as the production’s vengeful leading lady (Janis Paige). Patsy Kelly co-stars. 111 min. C/Rtg: NR
Standard/Widescreen; Soundtrack: English.
