They Drive By Night (1940)
This hard-boiled and compelling film noir, based on A.I. Bezzerides’ novel "Long Haul," stars George Raft and Humphrey Bogart as truck-driving brothers Joe and Paul Fabrini, whose dreams of owning their own business find them mixed up with crooked distributors, a usurious loan shark, a murderous wife, and shady business dealings. Classic WB drama from director Raoul Walsh co-stars Ann Sheridan, Ida Lupino, Gale Page, Alan Hale. 94 min. BW/Rtg: NR
Across The Pacific (1942)
Originally intended as a tale of a Japanese invasion of Hawaii, until the events of December 7, 1941 precluded that, this well-done WWII espionage tale follows court-martialed U.S. Army Captain Rick Leland (Humphrey Bogart) as he takes passage on a ship bound for Japan and learns of a plot to blow up the Panama Canal. Mary Astor, Sydney Greenstreet, Charles Halton co-star; directed by John Huston and Vincent Sherman. 97 min. BW/Rtg: NR
Action In The North Atlantic (1943)
This hearty flag-waver for the unsung WWII heroics of the Merchant Marines stars Humphrey Bogart as first officer Joe Rossi and Raymond Massey as his captain and friend, Steve Jarvis. After their oil tanker is sunk by a German U-boat, the crew mans a lifeboat back to America, and before long, are back at sea delivering supplies to Russia and shooting down Nazi planes. Co-stars Alan Hale, Julie Bishop, Sam Levene, and Ruth Gordon. 126 min. BW/Rtg: NR
Passage To Marseille (1944)
Reuniting many of the cast and crew from WB’s successful "Casablanca," this WWII drama tells the tale (in flashbacks) of five Devil’s Island escapees. Adrift aboard a lifeboat in the Atlantic, the men--headed by a French journalist (Humphrey Bogart)--join up with Free French sailors to fight for their occupied homeland. Claude Rains, Sydney Greenstreet, Peter Lorre, John Loder, Michèle Morgan co-star in this filming of the novel "Sans Patrie" by Charles Nordhoff and James Norman Hall; directed by Michael Curtiz. 109 min. BW/Rtg: NR
Standard; Soundtrack: English Dolby Digital mono; Subtitles: English, French, Spanish; featurettes; theatrical trailers; bloopers; newsreel footage; bonus short "Swingtime in the Movies" (1938).
