Captains Courageous (1937)
Rudyard Kipling's novel receives a classic screen translation, with Oscar-winner Spencer Tracy as Manuel, a Portuguese fisherman who becomes a father figure to the spoiled son (Freddie Bartholomew) of a millionaire after he saves the boy from drowning. Unable to return home for months, young Harvey works menial jobs aboard the schooner, adopting the higher values of Manuel and his shipmates. With Lionel Barrymore, Mickey Rooney, Melvyn Douglas. 111 min. BW/Rtg: NR
Boys Town (1938)
Spencer Tracy garnered his second consecutive Academy Award for his portrayal of Father Flanagan, founder of the famed home for delinquent and underprivileged youth, in this classic MGM melodrama. Mickey Rooney shines as one of the father's more recalcitrant charges; with Henry Hull, Bobs Watson. 93 min. BW/Rtg: NR
Dr. Jekyll And Mr. Hyde (1941)
Spencer Tracy relied more on expression and nuance than horrific make-up when he played literature's original "split personality" in this moody version of the timeless chiller. Lana Turner and Ingrid Bergman are the women helping pull Jekyll's personae apart. With Donald Crisp, Ian Hunter, C. Aubrey Smith; Victor Fleming directs. 113 min. BW/Rtg: NR
Bad Day At Black Rock (1955)
Shortly after WWII, the isolated Southwest town of Black Rock received its first outside visitor in many a year--one-armed veteran John Macreedy (Spencer Tracy). Quiet about his agenda, he’s received with suspicion by the unusually jumpy locals...and when his few innocuous questions scrape at the community’s shared, dark secret, he may not live to catch the train out. John Sturges’ compelling drama also stars Lee Marvin, Ernest Borgnine, Robert Ryan, Walter Brennan, Anne Francis. 81 min. C/Rtg: NR
Standard and Widescreen; Soundtrack: English Dolby Digital mono.
