Fed up with her job at a smalltown drugstore soda counter, Peggy Evans (Lana Turner) heads off to New York City, leaving behind a note that makes everyone think she's committed suicide. She reinvents herself thanks to a sexy makeover and begins to pass herself off as missing, amnesiac heiress Carol Burden.
