SYNOPSIS:
Writer-director Joseph L. Mankiewicz (The Quiet American, All About Eve, A Letter to Three Wives) turns a jaundiced eye toward Hollywood with The Barefoot Contessa starring Humphrey Bogart (Casablanca, The African Queen, The Maltese Falcon, Sabrina) as Harry Dawes, a film director on the decline, and Ava Gardner (The Killers, The Night of the Iguana, Mogambo, Show Boat) as the "Contessa" Maria Vargas, an enigmatic Spanish nightclub dancer turned world-famous movie star.
TEXT Co-starring are Edmond O'Brien (The Wild Bunch, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, Fantastic Voyage), who won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of studio flack Oscar Muldoon, Warren Stevens (Forbidden Planet, TV's Return to Peyton Place) as the powerful movie mogul Kirk Edwards and Rossano Brazzi (South Pacific, The Italian Job) as Vincenzo Torlato-Favrini, an Italian count who falls under Maria's romantic spell with devastating results. The Barefoot Contessa is photographed by the great Jack Cardiff (The Red Shoes, Black Narcissus) and features a score by Mario Nascimbene (Light in the Piazza). Marius Goring (A Matter of Life and Death), Valentina Cortese (Day for Night, The Adventures of Baron Munchausen), Elizabeth Sellars (Forbidden Cargo) and Mari Aldon (Distant Drums) round out the cast.
