Rebel Without A Cause (1955)
James Dean became a national symbol for ‘50s teen angst in director Nicholas Ray’s powerful character study of alienated youth. Dean stars as new kid in town Jim Stark, who faces problems at school, deals with his parents’ constant arguing, participates in knife fights and chicken races, and finds friendship with fellow outcast Plato (Sal Mineo) and the beautiful Judy (Natalie Wood). With Jim Backus, Dennis Hopper. 111 min. C/Rtg: PG-13
East Of Eden (1955)
In one of the most memorable starring debuts in Hollywood history, James Dean plays Cal Trask, a troubled teen in California’s Salinas Valley embroiled in a bitter competition with twin brother Aron (Richard Davalos) for the attention of their farmer father (Raymond Massey) and the love of Aron’s beautiful girlfriend (Julie Harris). Loosely based on John Steinbeck’s novel, director Elia Kazan’s drama also stars Jo Van Fleet, Burl Ives. 117 min. C/Rtg: PG
Giant (1956)
George Stevens directs this sprawling drama based on Edna Ferber’s novel about two generations in a wealthy Texas cattle clan. Rock Hudson is headstrong family patriarch "Bick" Benedict, Elizabeth Taylor is his wife Leslie, and James Dean (in his final film) is ranch hand-turned-oil-tycoon Jett Rink, who secretly pines for Leslie while locked in an ongoing rivalry with Bick. Carroll Baker, Jane Withers, Sal Mineo, Dennis Hopper also star. 3/13 hrs. C/Rtg: G
