James Mason is outstanding in his portrayal of General Erwin Rommel, head of Nazi Germany’s famed Afrika tank corps. The film follows Rommel’s career from his victories and ultimate defeat in World War II to how his growing frustration with the battle plans he’s ordered to execute would lead to his participation in a plot to assassinate Hitler and a grim choice concerning his own future.
