The Italian Job (2003)
Sly reworking of the 1969 actioner stars Mark Wahlberg as Charlie Croker, a master thief looking for revenge on former ally Steve Frazelli (Edward Norton), who double-crossed him during a Venice heist and made off with millions in gold bars. Croker reunites with his team--a computer geek (Seth Green), an explosives expert (Mos Def), an ace driver (Jason Statham), and a new recruit safecracker (Charlize Theron)--for a complex scheme to retrieve the booty from the L.A.-based Frazelli. 110 min. C/Rtg: PG-13
Shooter (2007)
Ex-Marine Corps sniper Bob Lee Swagger (Mark Wahlberg) is recruited to thwart an attempt on the life of the President of the United States. When he is double-crossed and framed for the assassination plot, Swagger is forced to go on the run until he can unravel the deadly conspiracy against him. White-knuckle thriller from director Antoine Fuqua ("Training Day") also stars Danny Glover, Kate Mara, and Elias Koteas. 125 min. C/Rtg: R
The Fighter (2010)
Heartfelt drama tells the true story of light welterweight boxer "Irish" Micky Ward (Mark Wahlberg), who strives to earn a title shot while a film crew focuses on a "comeback" attempt by Dicky Eklund (Oscar-winner Christian Bale), his drug-addled brother and trainer. While Dicky self-destructs and his manager mother (Oscar-winner Melissa Leo) offers promises but no results, Micky questions who deserves his loyalty after falling for a caring young woman (Amy Adams). With Jack McGee; directed by David O. Russell. 115 min. C/Rtg: R
Pain & Gain (2013)
Based on a true story, this mix of comedy and action from director Michael Bay follows the half-baked kidnapping and extortion scheme perpetrated by a trio of bodybuilders in mid-1990s Miami. Mark Wahlberg, Dwayne Johnson, and Anthony Mackie star as the meatheads whose plan to abduct a rich businessman (Tony Shalhoub) in an attempt to appropriate his wealth goes horribly, ridiculously awry. With Ed Harris, Rebel Wilson, Rob Corddry, and Ken Jeong. 129 min. C/Rtg: R
The Gambler (2014)
Disaffected Los Angeles lit professor Jim Bennett (Mark Wahlberg) doesn't get his biggest charge from a good novel, but from frequenting the city's network of underground casinos. However, when his insatiable need for action lands him a quarter of a million dollars in the hole, finding an out before the bookies find him might be his biggest gamble. Gritty redo of the 1974 James Caan opus co-stars Brie Larson, Michael Kenneth Williams, John Goodman, and Jessica Lange. 110 min. C/Rtg: R
