The Michael Caine Collection: The Ipcress File / Hurry Sundown / The Honorary Consul / The Fourth Protocol / Jack the Ripper [Import]
The Ipcress File (1965)
Michael Caine is author Len Deighton’s impassive secret agent Harry Palmer, in the first of the thrilling spy series. Palmer is assigned to investigate a plot involving brain-washed British scientists, but soon finds himself targeted for conditioning while dealing with a possible betrayal from within his own organization. Nigel Green, Guy Doleman, Sue Lloyd, Gordon Jackson also star in this exciting Cold War thriller. 109 min. C/Rtg: NR
Hurry Sundown (1967)
Perhaps more noted for its behind-the-scenes saga than the stir it created on the screen, director Otto Preminger’s scorching drama set in the 1940s tells the story of bigoted Georgia landgrabber Henry Warren (Michael Caine) who tries to force the sale of two plots of land to him by his cousin and a black sharecropper. Warren’s hostile takeover attempt results in a racially progressive pushback. Adapted from the K.B. Gilden novel; Jane Fonda, John Phillip Law, Diahann Carroll, Faye Dunaway, and Burgess Meredith co-star. 142 min. C/Rtg: NR
The Honorary Consul (Beyond The Limit) (1983)
Set against the backdrop of the imminent "Dirty War" in 1970s Argentina, this stirring adaptation of Graham Greene’s novel stars Richard Gere as half-English, half-Paraguayan medical doctor Eduardo Plarr, who becomes entwined in the lives of British consul Charles Fortnum (Michael Caine) and his seductive wife (Elpidia Carrillo). Features a soundtrack theme composed by Paul McCartney and performed by John Williams; directed by John Mackenzie ("The Long Good Friday"). 104 min. C/Rtg: R
The Fourth Protocol (1987)
Top-notch British suspense thriller from the pen of Frederick Forsyth, with Pierce Brosnan as Major Valeri Petrofsky, a KGB agent who is assigned to assemble and detonate a nuclear bomb on an English military base and make it appear to look like a nuclear accident. Michael Caine is recently-demoted MI5 officer John Preston, who stumbles across the plan and sets out to stop it. With Ned Beatty, Joanna Cassidy, Julian Glover; directed by John Mackenzie ("The Long Good Friday"). 114 min. C/Rtg: R
Jack The Ripper (1988)
Michael Caine stars as Scotland Yard inspector Frederick Abberline, who was charged with the pressure-filled task of tracking down the elusive murderer Jack the Ripper in this made-for-TV take on the infamous true crimes. Purporting to have unprecedented access to the case, the film suggests an actual suspect to be the man who killed prostitutes and was never captured in 1888 East London. Jane Seymour and Armand Assante co-star. 188 min. on two discs. C/Rtg: NR
