In the days following the Civil War, former soldier Henry Carson (Van Johnson) arrives in a small town in the Ozarks wearing a uniform that has become so worn out and faded, no one is sure which side he was fighting for. With the community still divided between Union and Confederate sympathizers, Carson's presence threatens to bring tensions to a boil.
