In his film debut, Paul Newman portrays Basil the Defender, a 1st-century Greek artisan sold into slavery by his evil uncle. When his gifts as a sculptor are discovered, Basil is commissioned to cast a silver replica of the cup Jesus used at the Last Supper. Jack Palance, Pier Angeli, Virginia Mayo, Lorne Greene, Natalie Wood, and E.G. Marshall also star in this sprawling costume epic based on the novel by Thomas B. Costain. 135 min.
